Five-spice Flank Steak

Ingredients

- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chinese five spice powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 lb flank steak, trimmed of visible fat
Recipe
- 1 preheat the oven to 475 degrees.
- 2 coat a cast-iron skillet with cooking spray and place in the oven while preparing the spice rub.
- 3 combine the sugar, five-spice powder, garlic powder and salt in a small bowl.
- 4 sprinkle half the mixture evenly over the surface of the steak, then pat or rub it into the meat.
- 5 turn the steak over, and repeat on the second side.
- 6 place the steak in the hot cast-iron skillet.
- 7 cook 6 to 7 minutes on each side, depending on desired degree of doneness.
- 8 remove the steak from the oven, and let it rest on the carving board for 3 to 5 minutes.
- 9 cut it across the grain on the diagonal in thin strips.
